I just read in two Danish newspapers that Mads is going to do a new Danish film called "Flammen og Citronen", meaning "The Flame and the Lemon".

Ole Christian Madsen is going to be the director. Same director as Prag, Unit One and several other Danish productions.

The name of the film might sound weird, but it's about two Danish resistant movement members (during World War II) with those two codenames. They existed for real, worked against the nazis when Denmark was occupied by Germany 1940-1945 and they are very famous in Denmark.

The shooting of the film which is to take place in Denmark, Prag (again!) and Berlin is supposed to start in March 2007. The premiere of the film is due to the beginning of 2008.

Nice to hear about a new Danish film!!!

DANISH FLAME & CITRON AT DKK 45+ MILLION

Danish director Ole Christian Madsen revive Danish World War II heroes in Flammen og Citronen (Flame & Citron/working title), starring Thure Lindhardt as one of the two legendary top members of the Resistance

Shortly before the Danish release (Friday, 3 November) of his new feature, Prag (Prague) – the Mads Mikkelsen-Stine Stengade starrer, which was launched at the Toronto International Film Festival – Danish director Ole Christian Madsen has received DKK 10.8 million production support from the Danish Film Institute for Flammen og Citronen (Flame & Citron/working title), one of the most expensive Danish-language films ever produced.

On a DKK 45+ million budget, Madsen and Nimbus Film will revive two World War II heroes in the Danish Resistance. Thure Lindhardt will play one of the leads, and producer Lars Bredo Rahbek expected the remaining cast will be announced in December. The financial packaging of the film, which will shoot from Monday, 5 March in Denmark, the Czech Republic (Prague) and Germany (Berlin’s Babelsberg Studios), is not fully completed. FilmFolket-Loke Havn will handle local distribution.

Penned by Madsen with Lars K Andersen, Flammen og Citronen (which were the code names of Bent Faurschou Hviid and Jørgen Haagen Schmidt) follows the two members of the Holger Danske resistance group who were initially assigned to kill Danish informers, later ordered to liquidate Germans. They never question their commanders until one day as Flammen is told to execute his girlfriend, Ketty, a Stockholm courier. The fight for freedom has entered a grey area where it is increasingly difficult to decide who is with whom.

Citronen was killed on 14 October 1944, in a shoot-out with the German secret police, Gestapo, and German soldiers. He was 33 years old. Aged 23, Flammen committed suicide a few days later (18 October), when he was captured, unarmed, swallowing poison to avoid falling into Gestapo’s hands.

Very interesting website. It's a Danish auction site for art, design etc. Apparently they have had a special auction for raising funds for fighting AIDS in Africa (where people have donated things for the auction). Seems like OC Madsen donated a day at the filming of Flammen & Citronen. An oportunity to accompany him during a whole day when shooting the film as his "assistant", being able to watch everything as "a fly on the wall" (quoting the description for the auction).

The auction ended on Feb 14th, and somebody won the auction at 6400 Danish kroner ($1,133.04 USD).

Danish WWII thriller FLAME & CITRON wrapping Prague shoot

by Theodore Schwinke, April 18, 2007

Production on Danish WWII thriller Flame & Citron is scheduled to wrap Saturday in Prague before moving on to Germany and Denmark, producer Lars Bredo Rahbek told ScreenDaily.com.

Director Ole Christian Madsen (En Kærlighedshistorie) started filming March 19 in Prague, using a retro-fitted warehouse as a studio. Other studio spaces in the Czech capital are occupied by crews working on Disney/Walden's The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Universal's Wanted.

Rahbek said the production needed to recreate historical scenes from 1944 Copenhagen and that the present-day city was too modern. "We scouted around Central Europe," he told ScreenDaily.com. "We looked at Riga, which bears an uncanny resemblance to Copenhagen in terms of architecture, but it didn't have what we needed in terms of infrastructure."

Rahbek said a key decision behind the Prague shoot was the positive experience Nimbus Film Productions had shooting Madsen's film Prague in the Czech capital. Local production service company Sirena Film worked with Madsen on that project and serves as co-producer on Flame & Citron.

The producers also achieved considerable savings by shooting in Prague. "For us as Danish producers it's an extremely expensive production," Rahbek said. "I think it's the biggest budget Danish film to date." Rahbek put the budget for the film at $8.6m (Euros 6.3m).

From Prague the production moves to Studio Babelsberg in Potsdam and then to Copenhagen, where it is scheduled to wrap June 13.

Rahbek (A Soap) and Morten Kaufmann (Prague) serve as producers on the project. Wueste Filmproduktion is the German partner. Financing also comes from Nimbus Film Rights, the Danish Film Institute, TV2 Danmark, MBB Berlin Brandenburg, the Nordic Film & TV Fund and Eurimages, among others. "Financing is enormously complex," Rahbek said, adding that 28 parties contributed to the project.

The film is based on a true story and stars Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) and Thure Linhardt as Resistance fighters who carried out assassinations during the German occupation of Denmark.

FilmFolket A/S will distribute the film in Denmark, where it is scheduled to premiere in early 2008. The Match Factory is handling international sales.

Rahbek hopes the historical aspects of the film will draw Danish audiences while the action story will appeal to international audiences. "It's a very taut thriller, but it's structured to have a very broad appeal," he said.

I bilen sidder Thure Lindhardt og Mads Mikkelsen alias frihedskæmperne Flammen og Citronen. Begge i danske politiuniformer.

På flugt

»Polizei.«

Håndbog i modstand

Mads Mikkelsen in role as patriot

"The Flame & the Lemon" that has Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen in the leading roles, becomes the most expensive Danish-speaking film ever. The director Ole Christian Madsen will show what it is to be a patriot.

9. juni 2007 kl. 12:16 • Simon Vöge Hansen

Autumn 1944. The German military machine rattles home against Das Vaterland closely chased by Russians at the eastern front and allies in Western Europe. In Denmark there has finally been more activity in the resistance. Entirely at the front are Bent Faurschou Hviid and Jørgen Haagen Schmidt with the aliases of the Flame and the Lemon. With equal parts of hatred of the Nazis and patriotism they make life more than a common misery for Hipo-peoples, informers and other collaborators in occupied Denmark . The country's most wanted duo succeeds - before they are caught by the Wehrmacht in October 1944 - liquidating over 30 people.

The Money Disappears

It's the dramatic story about "Flammen & Citronen" that director Ole Christian Madsen is putting the finishing touches on. In a week, the shooting of a film with a budget of more than 45 million kroners, the largest in Danish film-history, ends.

"I have really not felt that there has been more available money than otherwise. It's extremely demanding on resources to draw a historical picture from the time's best story, thus the money disappears quickly", the director says in a break between the shooting of the film in Østerbro in Copenhagen.

It doesn't work either if something on location is economized . A fashionable embassy quarter in honor of the occasion is completely blocked for traffic. Walk-ons dressed in a time-typical clothes in the year 1944 wait with their black-lacquered bicycles and ID papers in front of a manned road patrol. The group with dressed in black nazi-sympathizers from Schalburgkorpset is acting nervous and irritable.

The atmosphere is intensified when a gray Ford model 1938 hacks itself slowly up against the barricade. In the car sit Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen, the patriots known aliasly as Flammen and Citronen. Both are in Danish police uniforms.

On Escape

A Nazi with high cut riding boots shouts while he aims a pistol at the Ford's windscreen. The car stops, and Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen are resolutely overpowered with blows and kicks. A well-directed edge-of-hand blow knocks off Thure's hat and reveals crimson hair with a side parting cut in granite. Mads Mikkelsen carries small round glasses - the kind one associates with someone who is sickly. The faces are gray and filled with day-old stubble. That's how they look when on the run from the German Wehrmacht and a great deal of Danish nazi-sympathizers.

Handbook on Resistance

Ole Christian Madsen reveals that "the Flame & the Lemon" doesn't bargain over why the bachelor Bent Faurschou Hviid and the family father Jørgen Haagen Schmidt went into the resistance so emphatically. The film is more of a kind of ABC guide for people fighting in a resistance - a textbook on how patriots behave with an obsession.

"They do not all talk motivation in the film. We know that the Flame was a glowing anti-fascist, and that the Lemon was a national and thought of God, king and his country, but that's not all that the film is about. I consider it to be a film also about what it's like to be a member of the resistance and the skills/resources needed behind the resistance fighters. It's the greatest difference between "Flammen and Citronen" and other Danish films about the resistance", Ole Christian Madsen says.

Mads Mikkelsen, who still has on ash-colored make-up, supplements: "The film also is about what war does to human beings," he says.

The Germans

A single scene has burnt itself deeply into the mind of Mads Mikkelsen.

"We had to make a scene that showed how the Germans rolled in over the border on April 9. 1940, and it consequently was very violent to look at. If it happened today, it might well be that you'd say 'On with work gloves' just as he and the Lemon did," says the Danish movie star.

"And you knew it wouldn't get better as the number of Germans kept increasing, even though this time it was just walk-ons in German uniforms," adds Thure Lindhardt.

The two actors do not conceal that they respect their characters' impact on history.

"I still think you have to thank them that they sacrificed their lives at the time. If it had not been for these great resistance fighters, we would be Russians today. It's as simple as that", Mads Mikkelsen says.

Mads Mikkelsen Gets a German Beating

Ekstra Bladet followed along on the set of the resistance film "Flammen and Citronen" where Mads Mikkelsen and Thure Lindhart get their ears boxed.

"Out of the car, dammit, and down on the stomach, or we shoot!"

It's an enormous ass-kicking for the Flame and the Lemon, played by Thure Lindhardt and Mads Mikkelsen, since they have chosen the wrong disguise on quite a dark day and have to go through a Schalburgkorps-barricade in order to go hunting for informers.

The Germans' helpers have just that day been ordered to arrest and intern Danish police; thus the Schalburg-boys do not know which ’gold-nugget’ they have got hold of, the Flame or the Lemon - disguised as police - who have come along in their car.

The press got permission yesterday to be along on the filming of the accident-prone day on September 19. 1944. The filming happened on the actual Ryvangs Alle, and they (Flame and Lemon) were not fingered in connection with the arrest.

Got Nausea

"We have both become very busy with the Flame and Citronen's history. For me there is no doubt that I'd also become very national if somebody came and took my country. That was what I could feel when we made the filming about April 9, where we saw the German trucks en masse roll in over the border. Ugh!, it was an ugly sight. I was really nauseous. That seemed so violent and so provoking to me," Mads Mikkelsen reports.

Thure Lindhardt's figure, the Flame (because of the hair color), doesn't suffer especially much from patriotism. Instead he is a glowing anti-fascist, and that's his motivation to fight the occupying power and drive back the Germans.

"We do not know the real Flame and the Lemon, and if we could meet them, we'd probably only reach to their suspenders; but the building up of our characters has come about as a combination of historical facts and a bit of fiction. It has been incredibly exciting," Thure Lindhardt says.

The film that is a Danish/German co-production has been filmed in the Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark. The filming is expected to be done in about a week's time.

Fund sparks German film business

High-profile movies take advantege of rebate

By ED MEZA, Posted: Fri., Aug. 3, 2007, 3:07pm PT

BERLIN -- For the Teutonic film industry, the biggest hit of the year has turned out to be the government's $80 million-a-year German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), which has bolstered a local and international production well beyond initial expectations.

The German Federal Film Board (FFA), which administers the fund, is reporting boffo effects for the nation's film industry: This year, the fund has slated $75.3 million for a total of 81 projects that will generate a total economic effect of $500 million for the local industry.

The DFFF has already granted nearly $43 million to 47 international and domestic productions, with some $33 million lined up for a further 34 projects this year.

Introduced this year to help the local industry after the government cracked down on the now-defunct private tax-shelter film funds, the DFFF grants productions that shoot in Germany a 20% refund on local spend.

Among those already receiving the rebate are such high-profile international pics as Brian Singer's WWII drama "Valkyrie," starring Tom Cruise, and the Wachowski brothers' "Speed Racer." The United Artists film, about German military hero Col. Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg's attempted assassination of Adolf Hitler, is receiving $6.5 million, while Warner Bros.' live-action adaptation of Tatsuo Yoshida's cult 1960s cartoon series is getting $12.3 million -- so far the largest amount allocated any production.

Ole Christian Madsen's Danish WWII drama "Flame & Citron," starring "Casino Royale" villain Mads Mikkelsen, was the first international production allotted coin from the fund. The fact-based gangster drama about two resistance fighters shot in the Berlin and Brandenburg region and received some $460,000.

Also expected to benefit from the DFFF is Michael Hoffman's "The Last Station," an $18 million Leo Tolstoy biopic starring Anthony Hopkins and Meryl Streep.

FFA topper Peter Dinges is eager to attract major international production to Germany with the fund.

"We set out to improve the economic conditions of Germany's film industry and at the same time create sustainable momentum in the country for film production," says Dinges. "We achieved these goals much faster than we had hoped."

The DFFF has made Germany a much more attractive location for high-profile international production, Dinges adds. "That would surely not have been possible in Germany without the incentive of the fund."

Studio Babelsberg, located just outside Berlin, has seen its revenues skyrocket thanks in large part to DFFF-financed productions. The company is expecting revenue to reach nearly $140 million this year compared to only $22.4 million in 2006.

It's co-producing "Valkyrie," "Speed Racer" and "Flame & Citroen," with a total of 11 productions shooting in its backlot and soundstages this year.

"Thanks to the successful introduction of the DFFF and as a result of the continuing trend to produce films internationally, we are expecting very positive business growth in the next few years," says Studio Babelsberg topper Carl Woebcken.

Indeed, in addition to international productions, two local films financed through the DFFF also shot at the studio, Mike Eschmann's military comedy "Ausbilder Schmidt" and Vanessa Jopp's Christmas-themed family comedy "Meine schoene Bescherung."

Also expected to lense at Babelsberg this year is Columbia Pictures thriller "The International," directed by Tom Tykwer and starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts.

"I'm awaiting the opening night of the new film Flammen and Citronen, otherwise I'm not doing much else at the present. Until the opening night, I just relax with my family," reports Mads Mikkelsen who looks forward to meeting queen Margrethe.

"I think they are working on there being a gala opening night for the Flame and the Lemon on March 27th, but I am not completely sure. That varies a little between 26, 27. and March 28th, depending on which day the Queen can come," says Mads Mikkelsen.

Mary & Frederik @ gala movie The Flame and the Lemon

SATURDAY, 29 MARCH 2008

Last Tuesday evening (March 25) Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary attended the gala premiere of the World War II Danish resistance movie Flammen og Citronen (The Flame and The Lemon) set in Copenhagen in 1944. The movie is based on the real story of the two resistence fighters of the title. Ninety six-year-old Elisabeth Bomhoff, who presented flowers to Mary, was a member of the Danish resistance movement during the war. She was giving refuge to 'The Flame' in his last days. It was in her house that he was hiding when the Gestapo arrived one day and surrounded the house. The Flame took a cyanide capsule before they could capture him.

Royalty sees The Flame and The Lemon

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik were...invited to the Imperial Biografen [cinema] as guests of honour at the gala opening night of Ole Christian Madsen's new film Flammen & Citronen...The head of court (Chamberlain) for the Crown Prince and Princess Per Thornit and his wife Ulla Thornit [also attended].
The royals ...met with the director Ole Christian Madsen, the actors Mads Mikkelsen, Thure Lindhardt, Stine Stengade and Peter Mygind as well as producer Lars Bredo Rahbek.

They also had the opportunity to meet Elisabeth Bomhoff (the 96-year-old who harboured the Flame in her basement), who was accompanied by Peter Øvig Knudsen and Gunnar Dyrberg (one a member of the resistance and the other a "colleague" of the Flame).

The movie: While the Danish population hopes for the war's end, the resistance members Bent Faurschou-Hviid (23), known as the Flame (Thure Lindhartd) and Jørgen Haagen Schmith (33), known as the Lemon (Mads Mikkelsen), hid at great risk as part of the Holger Danske group.

The fearless and uncompromising Flame is a committed anti-fascist and dreams about the day when the whole group can operate in the open and go on an armed counter attack on the occupying power, Germany.

The more sensitive Father and family man, The Lemon, has so far mainly acted as a driver for The Flame, but is now more deeply drawn into the group's work.

The film about two Danish resistance fighters from the second World War II, Flame and Citron, will now premiere in Germany. I am a former resistance fighter and friend of the two.

Germans can now get an insight into how two Danish resistance fighters worked during Germany's occupation of Denmark from 1940 to 1945.

The film about 'Flame and Citron' gets namely Germany premiere on 26 August in Flensburg. And I am Jorgen Kieler, who was a member of the resistance group Holger Danish with 'Flame and Citron'.

- All our knowledge about the occupation to be shared with Germany. It is common history that we all have to draw a conclusion, and the film might inspire Germans to that, either now or in the future must accept dictatorship, says Jorgen Kieler Ritzau.

Flame and Citron come to speak German in the movie, because it, like most other movies in Germany are dubbed into German speech.

The film will be called 'Take des Zorn' or the Danish 'Wrath days', and according to the newspaper Der Nordschleswiger has Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Peter Harry Carstensen, promised to attend the premiere along with, among others, actor Mads Mikkelsen.
